As more details emerge, Gadkari in trouble over funding for his companies

NEW DELHI: BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday found himself in trouble with the government deciding to go into allegations of dubious funding in his companies which cast a shadow over his getting a second term as party president in December.
As embarrassing details tumbled out about the funding for Purti Power and Sugar Ltd run by Gadkari, corporate affairs minister M Veerappa Moily said as the information on the issue has come in public domain, the Registrars of Companies will "definitely inquire into it".
"We have not ordered anything. It is all coming in the newspapers. Since it has come in public domain, we told our ministry to make some discreet inquiry to find out what exactly is the matter. Are there any violations of Companies Act?" he said.
When asked whether the business dealings of Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, will also be scrutinised, he said the two issues were separate and there was no link between them.
Media reports have raised questions over the source of funds for Purti Power and Sugar Ltd controlled by Gadkari. Media investigations claim that major investments and large loans to Purti were made by a construction firm Ideal Road Builders (IRB) group, which had won contracts between 1995 and 1999, when Gadkari was PWD minister in Maharashtra.
Gadkari has denied the allegations and offered himself and his companies to any probe.
BJP attacked the government saying its approach was "selective and prejudiced" about dealing with Gadkari issue while ignoring corruption allegations against Vadra and former Union minister Virbhadra Singh.
The party said it endorses the stand of Gadkari that he was open to any investigation by any competent authority.
Adding to Gadkari's discomfiture, his party MP Ram Jethmalani demanded his resignation in the wake of corruption allegations and asked him not to seek a second term in office.
"In the interest of the party, in his own interest, he should get out of the fray now and he must give the position to somebody who inspires greater confidence. He should not aspire for a second term," he said.
"Obviously, there is suspicion about his integrity and in the interest of the party and his own interest he must get out of this position. It weakens the party position.
"In the coming elections we are fighting against corruption and we have to have a man of absolute impeccable integrity," he said.
Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who has been attacking Gadkari, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking an investigation into the dealings of Gadkari's company. "Gadkari has also said that he is open to a free and fair investigation. Being the National President of BJP, it is in the fitness of things that his case is properly investigated and he gets a fair opportunity to prove his innocence and clear his name," Digvijaya Singh wrote in his letter.

Yeddyurappa to quit BJP before December 10

Announcing that he plans to quit before December 10, 2012 disgruntled Karnataka BJP strongman B.S. Yeddyurappa on Tuesday said the process of starting a new party would begin on Wednesday.
“I will not patch up with BJP. I am Yeddyurappa, I do whatever I say and I have been doing it over the years. I will tender my resignation from State Assembly and primary membership of BJP anytime before December 10,” he told reporters after performing Ayudh Puja at his office in Bangalore.
Mr. Yeddyurappa, who has been cut up with the BJP leadership over the party sidelining him since his resignation last year as Karnataka Chief Minister, said he would launch his party at a public rally in Haveri.
“The process of starting a new party will begin from tomorrow,” he said without elaborating.
Mr. Yeddyurappa, however, said he would not pull down the BJP government even after resigning from the Karnataka Assembly.
Asked about BJP state general secretary Prahalad Joshi’s remarks that party president Nitin Gadkari was making efforts to convince him not to desert the party, Mr. Yeddyurappa said it was far from truth and no efforts were made by any leader in this regard.
Mr. Yeddyurappa, who was forced to quit by the BJP central leadership in the wake of Lokayukta report on illegal mining indicting him, said his proposed party would fight on “secular ideology”.

Centre places Kasab mercy plea in Pranab's court

In this November 26, 2008 photo, Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab walks through the CST railway station in Mumbai. The Home Ministry on Tuesday rejected Kasab’s mercy petition

The mercy plea of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, has been rejected by the government which has sent its recommendation to the President.
A top Home Ministry official said Kasab’s mercy petition has been dismissed as he was involved in a grave crime and waging war against India that led to killing 166 people.
The 25-year-old Pakistani and nine other fellow Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists had landed in Mumbai on November 26, 2008 by sea from Karachi and had gone on a shooting spree at various places, carrying out the country’s worst terror attack. While Kasab was captured alive, the other terrorists were killed by security forces.
Kasab’s mercy petition was sent to the Home Ministry by the Maharashtra government last month after rejecting the plea.
A brief official release said, “The Home Ministry has only processed Kasab’s mercy petition and submitted it to President for decision”.
After nearly a four-year-long legal battle, on August 29, 2012 the Supreme Court had confirmed the death penalty awarded to the LeT operative by the trial court and later upheld by the Bombay High Court. Upholding Kasab’s conviction, the Supreme Court had said that he killed without “the slightest twinge of conscience”.
The Pakistani gunman is currently lodged in the high-security Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.
After the Home Ministry’s recommendation, it is now left to President Pranab Mukherjee to take a final decision on Kasab’s mercy plea.
There are more than a dozen mercy petitions pending before the President for final decision which include Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru.
